PATTERN TIPS

PATTERN TIPS
Tips for Better Patterns
The same photo can turn into a very different pattern depending on how you prepare it and which column and color counts you pick. These tips are based on how Dot Studio actually converts photos.
Choosing a photo
Make the subject big
Dot Studio divides the whole photo into equal cells. If the subject fills only a small part of the photo, it gets only a few cells and faces or patterns blur together. After adding the photo, use Adjust photo to crop around the subject. Choosing the 1:1 ratio gives a square pattern. At 40 columns, a face that spans at least half the photo's width keeps recognizable eyes, nose and mouth.
Keep the background simple
A busy background takes palette colors away from the subject. Backgrounds close to a single color, like a white wall or the sky, work best. With a plain background, try Clear border background: the connected area of the color touching the photo's edges the most becomes empty, leaving just the subject. If the subject's color is close to the background, part of the subject may be cleared too, so check the result.
Bright, sharp photos
Each cell takes the average of the colors inside it. Blurry or dark photos average out into many similar browns and grays that are hard to tell apart. Choose a photo taken in good light with clear contrast between the subject and the background. If a photo you already have is dark or flat, raising brightness and contrast a little in Adjust photo helps the colors separate.
Transparent PNGs work as they are
For stickers or character art with the background already removed, transparent areas automatically become empty cells, so no background clearing is needed. A partly transparent cell is kept only when it is at least half opaque.
Choosing the number of columns
Rows follow the photo's shape automatically. Below are examples for a tall 3:4 photo and a square photo. More cells means more detail, and more time to paint.
| Columns | 3:4 photo | Square photo | Good for |
| 16–24 | 24×32 = 768 cells | 16×16 = 256 cells | Icons, simple characters, logos |
| 32–48 | 40×53 = 2,120 cells | 40×40 = 1,600 cells | Pets, portraits |
| 60–100 | 60×80 = 4,800 cells | 80×80 = 6,400 cells | Landscapes, group photos |
If this is your first pattern, start around 40 columns, a size you can finish in one sitting. A 100-column pattern can go over ten thousand cells, so make good use of Fill area.
Choosing the number of colors
Dot Studio groups similar colors using the Lab color space, which follows how people perceive color differences, and keeps as many representative colors as you choose.
- 3–8 colors: a simple poster or cartoon look. Colors are clearly different, so painting is easy, and it is great with kids.
- 10–16 colors: where photos start to look like photos. The default of 12 colors for a new photo is in this range.
- 18–24 colors: smooth areas like skin or sky look more natural, but there are more similar-looking colors, so watch the numbers.
The palette is sorted so the most used color is number 1. If you raise the color count and the last few colors cover only a handful of cells, the photo does not need that many colors and you can lower the count.
Using patterns for beads, cross-stitch or printing
Fuse beads
The common large square pegboard for 5mm fuse beads is 29 pegs on each side. Columns are set in steps of 2, so use 28 columns to fit one board or 58 columns for two boards side by side. With a square photo the rows match. Set the color count to the number of bead colors you own so nothing goes unused.
Cross-stitch
14-count Aida fabric fits 14 stitches per inch (2.54cm). A 40-column pattern ends up about 7.3cm wide, and 60 columns about 10.9cm. Multiply the finished width you want in centimeters by 5.5 for a rough column count.
Printing and coloring
The image from Save number chart has only numbers in white cells, ideal for printing and coloring with pencils. Ruler marks every 5 cells and bold lines every 10 make it easy to find your place, and the legend lists each number's color and cell count. For a single A4 sheet, 40–60 columns keeps the numbers easy to read.
A comfortable painting order
- Start with color 1: filling the largest area first reveals the outline quickly and makes the remaining cells easy to find.
- Use Fill area for big shapes: a connected block of the same number takes one click.
- Zoom in for the last cells: the final one or two cells are quick to find when you zoom in and watch the remaining count in the palette.
Please use photos responsibly
Your own photos and drawings work best. Keep patterns made from cartoon or game characters, or from other people's artwork, for personal enjoyment only, and do not sell them or present them as your own work. If other people appear in your photo, please get their permission.
